Panama intends to develop 16 new hydropower projects ($1bn) to meet domestic electricity consumption. The projects should be built by private companies by 2015 to add a combined capacity of 700 MW to the power grid. According to the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP), the country's electricity demand is expected to increase by 7% in 2011.

Whereas Panama’s capacity is increasing, Latin America’s total energy production slightly fell by around 2%. Furthermore the net exporting region Latin America experienced a cut of -4% in its trade surplus.
