Ghana became an oil producer in December 2010 with the start of the production of the Jubilee field, three years after the first discovery well. The initial production of 120,000 bbl/d will be raised to 250,000 bbl/d by 2013. Natural gas production is expected to begin by the end-2011.

Overall, Africa boosted world-wide consumption of crude oil. Significant increase in Nigerian crude oil production offset falls in Algeria, Iraq and Venezuela. South-Africa increased its coal trade surplus by 4.5% during the year, while Algerian natural gas output fell another 12%. Africa also registered a 6% increase in power generation.
